It’s the tenth anniversary of the disappearance of 35-year-old chef Claudia Lawrence who went missing from York in 2009. Claudia’s case swiftly became one of this century's most high-profile investigations. It’s believed she set off from home to walk to work at 5 a.m. Was she abducted en-route? Did she get into the car of someone she knew? Or did Claudia decide to start a new life abroad?
The inquiry became more complex after the media went into a feeding frenzy over Claudia’s love life. For a time, Claudia was portrayed as a scarlet woman, an image her friends and family say was inaccurate. It made men in the local community reluctant to come forward with information, for fear of being thought to have had an affair with her. The lack of information resulted in the eventual scaling back of one of the biggest inquiries in North Yorkshire Police history – there were arrests, but not enough evidence for anyone to be charged or prosecuted.
So what did become of 35-year-old Claudia? In this film, with never-before heard broadcast testimony, we reveal a mystery man spent the night with her two days before her disappearance. Can he shed light on what happened? We travel to Cyprus, where Claudia had dreamed of building a new life. But when she vanished, she left her passport in her bedroom – police wondered if she’d been smuggled to the island in a van.
